The Olomouc Fountains (Olomoucké kašny) are one of the most distinctive and artistic features of the historic centre of Olomouc, Czech Republic. Scattered across the city’s main squares and streets, these Baroque fountains form a unique open-air gallery that reflects the city’s rich artistic, cultural, and historical heritage.
Most of the fountains were created during the 17th and 18th centuries, a period when Olomouc was an important administrative, religious, and cultural centre of Moravia. After devastating plague epidemics, the city commissioned several monumental fountains as symbols of protection, gratitude, and divine blessing.
The fountains are designed in the Baroque style, characterized by dynamic sculptures, dramatic compositions, and rich decorative details. Each fountain represents mythological, religious, or allegorical themes, combining water architecture with sculptural art.
Among the most famous is the Caesar Fountain, which depicts Julius Caesar as the mythical founder of Olomouc. Another important monument is the Hercules Fountain, symbolizing strength and protection. Together with other fountains such as Jupiter, Neptune, and Mercury fountains, they create a symbolic network throughout the historic centre.
The fountains are mainly located in Horní náměstí (Upper Square) and Dolní náměstí (Lower Square), as well as in nearby streets. Their placement was carefully planned to enhance the urban landscape and create visual focal points within the city.
Each fountain has its own artistic story and symbolism. Sculptures often depict gods, heroes, and allegorical figures representing virtues such as justice, courage, and wisdom. Water flows through stone basins and sculpted figures, bringing movement and life to the historic environment.
In addition to their artistic value, the fountains also played a practical role in the past, serving as sources of water for the city. Over time, they became primarily decorative and symbolic monuments, reflecting Olomouc’s status as a Baroque cultural centre.
Today, the Olomouc fountains are one of the city’s most popular attractions. They are especially beautiful during the summer months, when outdoor cafés, cultural events, and festivals bring life to the historic squares.
Together with landmarks such as the Holy Trinity Column (UNESCO) and the historic town hall, the fountains form part of a unique Baroque urban ensemble that makes Olomouc one of the most beautiful historic cities in Central Europe.
