The Goat Castle (Kozí hrádek) in Mikulov is a historic hilltop ruin and former watchtower located above the South Moravian wine town of Mikulov, near the Austrian border. Standing on a rocky limestone hill, it offers dramatic views over the Pálava Protected Landscape Area, vineyards, and the entire Mikulov basin.
Despite its name, Goat Castle was not originally a castle in the traditional sense, but rather a defensive observation tower and small fortification. It was built in the 15th–16th century period as part of Mikulov’s broader defensive system, which included the main Mikulov Castle and surrounding strategic points controlling trade routes and border movement.
The structure played an important role in monitoring the surrounding landscape and protecting the town from potential threats. Its elevated position made it an ideal lookout point over the vineyards, valleys, and approaches to Mikulov from the south.
Over time, the site lost its military importance and gradually fell into ruin. Today, only partial remains of the original structure are preserved, but the location itself remains highly significant due to its historical value and exceptional panoramic views.
Visitors reaching Goat Castle are rewarded with one of the most impressive viewpoints in the Mikulov region. From the hilltop, it is possible to see Mikulov Castle, Holy Hill (Svatý kopeček), the historic town centre, and the rolling vineyards of Pálava stretching toward the horizon.
The surrounding landscape is part of the Pálava Protected Landscape Area, known for its limestone formations, dry grasslands, and unique biodiversity. This combination of natural and historical elements creates a distinctive atmosphere that reflects the long connection between human settlement and nature in the region.
Access to Goat Castle is possible via walking trails leading from Mikulov. The route is relatively short but includes a gentle climb, making it a popular destination for both casual visitors and hiking enthusiasts. The path is often combined with visits to other nearby landmarks such as Mikulov Castle or Holy Hill.
Today, Goat Castle serves primarily as a scenic viewpoint and historical reminder of Mikulov’s defensive past. It is especially popular at sunset, when the warm light illuminates the vineyards and limestone hills of Pálava.
Although modest in size, Goat Castle is an important part of Mikulov’s historical landscape, offering visitors a quiet and atmospheric place to reflect on the region’s rich past and natural beauty.
